WARNING: SPOILERS-ISH
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ First impressions on A Dog's Purpose ? Great! The main character (still trying to figure out what to call them, considering that they change names every few chapters) is an engaging story-teller, and details that clue you in on the environment are abundant. Anyhow, I should tell you about the characters. The main character, Bailey/Toby, is a dog who is going through multiple lives and trying to find his purpose on this earth. He starts out as a nameless puppy living in the woods, until he is found and named Toby. After dying for the first time, he is reborn as a golden retriever puppy in [what I think is] a backyard breeder's, and after escaping and nearly dying a second time, ends up in a family with the name Bailey. Bailey (I'm just going to use this name for now) is a curious, well meaning dog who is trying to find his purpose in life. His (current) owner, Ethan, is a kid in grade school that is, for the most part, a well behaved child. Sometime's he makes mistakes, but don't we all? So far I really like the book, it draws you in and stays interesting through each chapter. There are suspenseful cliffhangers and relieving resolutions, that sometimes come back around later in the book. I can't think of a single thing about the book that I question or dislike so far, so TAADAA! You have now heard everything I have to say at this point in time about A Dog's Purpose; thank you for reading!!
Ok, so honestly, my spring break wasn't all that interesting, (The most interesting part is how my grandma stayed with us after flyng in from North Carolina) But I'm still not sure what sport "March Madness" revolves around (basketball?), and I don't really care about celebs all that much. Therefore, I am kind of stuck doing a blog on spring break. TAADAA!
So, back to my grandma (There's actually a story behind why she came). So, originally, I was supposed to be with my dad for spring break, but he had to work half the week, so he and my mom decided that the week of spring break would go like any other week: half with my mom and half with my dad. There was only one problem, my mom was taking one of her classes to Detroit for most of the week. So, my grandma decided she would fly up from Washington, North Carolina for five days to hang out and watch my brother and me. (I don't think she realized that it was going to snow and be cold the whole time she was here) Anyway, that was the most eventful part of my break. While my grandma was here we hung out on the couch and went to Fired Up (pottery studio next to the co-op). I managed to make pasta to feed her and my brother, which apparently didn't have enough sauce, and ate mostly pizza and cheesecake most of the week. (In my defense, my diet could have been much worse) At my dad's house we did some more hanging out on the couch and watching movies, so overall I think it was a very restful staycation! Thanks for reading! 2. Bruno was the main character in "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas". He was an 8 year old boy with short brown hair, who was curious, nosy, adventurous, a little bit mischevious, and kind of oblivious. From what I saw, he didn't really think too much about what he said or how it would affect the people he was talking to*. He tended to have a fairly happy and inquisitive disposition/demeanor, and thought mostly about the normal things that 8 year olds think about (Why is the tutor assigning us this book? What did Gretel do with her dolls? etc...), although it seems that occasionally his mind would drift and he would try to figure out what the concentration camps were and what they were burning in the chimneys.
4. I liked the book better than the movie because it allows the reader to become much more familiar with the characters and get a much more detailed look into the story because the book doesn't have to try and squeeze the whole plot into a limited amount of space like the movie (although night was condensed down into about a hundred pages for about the same reason). To add on to that, the book gives the audience much more room to imagine their own characters and settings, whereas in most movies it is already set in stone by the actors and sets. So, in short I liked "Night" more than "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas" because there are several things books allow you to do that movies don't (and I missed two days of the movie+I was re-watching the part I did see :) ) *When Pevel was bandaging up Bruno's knee, Bruno found out that Pevel had previously practiced as doctor. Instead of trying to avoid talking about Pevel's past life (What I would do), Bruno came right out and told Pevel that he must not have been a good doctor if he had to practice and he ended up peeling potatoes. Thankfully, Pevel thought this was funny and didn't think much of it, but it just shows how nosy and bad at reading situations Bruno is.
Wow, I've never really thought about what I would do/fix if I was president, although this blog does seem pretty familiar (Three Traits I Think are Important in a US President). I guess I would focus on education, foreign relationships, and
I would focus on education if I was POTUS for a few reasons. First of all, if someone is well educated, then they are much more likely to be able to get a job in the future, which could lower the unemployment rate and (since people would be in school working with others every day) leave graduates with some critical social skills. Because more people would be able to get jobs, their better education could lower the percentage of homeless and hungry people, and because more people will have a steady income and a good schooling, businesses will do better because there will be more employees and people that are able to buy their products. After that, taxes on the thriving businesses could go to the education system and continue the cycle. I know this is a lot of words and is kind of confusing, so for a simpler representation, look below! Education-->jobs-->lower unemployment rate-->lower homeless population-->businesses will do better-->taxes on businesses go back to education! The second thing I would try to fix would be foreign relationships, because I feel like we have screwed up things with other countries enough already. I mean, the current president not only signed orders to build border walls, but also kept all immigrants out for about 140 days, so honestly, I feel like the other countries aren't thrilled with us right now. To fix this, I would start by revoking the immigrant ban and the wall and apologizing for all the stuff that has happened. Then, I would continue to forge the relationships by engaging in trade and helping the other countries in need with their issues. I would also keep communication regular so that I was well informed about the world. The third thing I would try to fix is climate change. It is killing creatures, melting ice burgs, and many people don't believe in it. If I did this I feel like it could help animals and forests everywhere, and keep our world the nice way it is! To fix climate change I would raise awareness of pollution and climate change, attempt to stop or reduce deforestation,and use my good foreign relations to work with other countries to make an effort to prevent thermal temperatures from rising and greenhouse gasses from increasing. These are the three things that I would change if I was president. Thanks for reading! Winter break this year was really great. I went to water parks, stayed home and hung out with my family, slept in, and got some great gifts. I think that one of the best parts of winter break was going to water parks in the dells. On the first day of break we essentially woke up, ate breakfast, hit the road. We drove for about 3-ish hours before we stopped at our favorite restaurant in Madison, WI: Monte's Blueplate Diner. There, I ate a grilled cheese and tomato soup, lemonade, and some of the best pie in the U.S. After that, we drove to the Great Wolf Lodge and wriggled into our swimsuits so we could swim in the wave pool and ride the slides. The next day we went to the Kalahari (another one of our favorite indoor water parks) and swam there for the day before heading home.
Besides the water parks, my break was pretty chill. I [consistently] stayed up until 1 and slept till 11 and spent half the rest of my time re-binge-watching my favorite shows on Netflix. I FINALLY won a game of monopoly against my brother, got to start re-arranging my room, and got to hang out with my mom, her boyfriend, my brother, my dad, and my dogs. In other words, my break was relaxing with just a hint of excitement, and overall a great two weeks. Prompt: Read this article and provide your opinion.
We are all getting older, and many of us are going off to college within a few years. This article goes over 8 life skills that it believes all students should have before they go to college, including talking to strangers, finding their way around, managing assignments, contributing to a household, handling problems, coping with the ups and downs of school, managing money, and taking risks. Most of these points and paragraphs I agree with but a few I do not. The only thing I really don't really agree with in this article is how throughout the piece they mention all these things that parents shouldn't be doing for their kids, like in the second bullet point they say people shouldn't accompany there kids everywhere. They go on and on about how parents drive their kids everywhere and accompany them on the city bus and all. I agree that kids should get their own time to explore independantly, but you should still escort them places occaisionally; no 6 year old should be taking trips around town on a bus alone. They could get lost, abducted, or hit by a car. Anyhow, I think this is a great article besides the "crutch" sections; which don't entirely seem realistic or smart. So that's my opinion on this article and it's views. Thanks for reading! Prompt: Write about a rule at school that you don't like. How would you replace it?
That's not going to be very hard. My least favorite rule, by far, is that we can't run in the hallways. EVER. I can understand why we wouldn't be allowed to, people running into eachother and doors, but it could be very useful to run if it could be structured. There could be very strict rules about only running on the right side, etc. which could allow teachers to shorten passing time and would work in exercise for the students between classes. There could be a designated walking lane, and- wait, I was going to say why I don't like the rule, not rambling about how it could be fixed... although that might actually work... but anyway, I don't like it because the teachers don't seem to understand, the only reason we would be running is if we thought we were going to be late, so they should choose to either let us run or stop punishing us for being late, because they make such a big deal about not being tardy, but won't let us do what we need to to get to class on time. I think people should let us run once the minute bell has rung. If someone wanted to avoid the chaos of everyone running places, then they can get to class before the minute bell, and the people that are running late and need to get to class can be there on time. This is my least favorite rule that the school has and what I think they could do to fix it. I am thankful for several things. I am thankful for food and a place to sleep, which is more than a lot of people have. I am thankful for my family, even though they can be kind of annoying. I am thankful for my education; for the people who fought for that right and won, and for the people that are still fighting. I am thankful for my friends, who know and understand more about me than anyone else possibly could. I am also thankful for my phone; the fourth one in my possession ( see next blog:D ).
Anyhow, on to the things I am not going to be thankful for anytime soon, because what would a thankful blog be without it? I am definitely NOT thankful for the cold I'm going to have to suffer through through break; coughing up phlegm on my day off, fun... Next thing I could be a lot more thankful for, the weather. Although the occasionally grey, chilly day can be nice, and it is nice that the weather is finally behaving like it should, it would still be cool (ha, pun not intended) if it could have stayed warm for another week or so. Finally, I wish we could have another bathroom in our house over break. My mom has friends staying over, so it will be four people sharing our little bathroom downstairs and four sharing the one up stairs. It will definitely be interesting to see how that goes; not that I don't like guests, it will just be a little tight in our bathrooms :) . Thanks for reading and have a great break! |
